What do studies on smart slime mold, whale snot, tequila diamonds, fruit bat fellatio, and how cursing kills pain have in common? They’ve all been honored with past Ig Nobel prizes, given annually to real research “that first makes people laugh, and then makes them think.” (View our coverage of past winners.)

This year’s raucous ceremony from Harvard’s Sanders Theater will be streamed live right here on National Geographic.com! Tune in Thursday, September 12th at 6:00 pm ET.

The event is hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research and several Harvard University student groups.

Half a dozen genuine Nobel laureates will take the stage to hand out prizes during a zany science celebration that also includes a “Force” themed mini-opera dubbed “The Blonsky Device,” and 24/7 lectures that challenge some of the world’s top thinkers to explain their subjects twice—first in 24 seconds and then, clearly, in just 7 words.
